Jaipur’s architectural plans may have been ancient, but the execution was certainly modern. Best represented by the City Palace complex, it combines the best of Rajput and Mughal architecture to create a new tradition that is prevalent throughout northern India. As in the Mughal tradition, the durbars, or courtyards, were much more open, featuring a series of arched gazebos supported by elaborately crafted columns. Ornaments have always been part of the national architectural heritage and are now much richer.
