Salem, the headquarters of the district of the same name, is the fifth largest city in Tamil Nadu and one of the all-time favourite spots in the state. A famous industrial place with a natural setting, the city is surrounded by hills on all sides. Separated by Thirumanimuthar River into two halves, the city is home to fort drawing those fascinated by history.

Sights to See
Located in the heart of the city, this oldest mosque in Salem, it is believed to have been built by Tipu Sultan the Mysore ruler who fought bravely with the British.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this 13th century shrine is one of the oldest in Salem. It was built by Mamannan Sundara Pandiyan. Apart from these, Gugai Mariamman, Kaliamman Temple, Sowdeswari Amman Temple, Ellai Pedari Amman Temple, Tharamangalam Kailasnathar, Oothumalai and Kottai Perumal Koil are famous shrines in Salem.

Yercaud (33 km)
This quiet little hill station on the Shevaroy hills of the Eastern Ghats is the only one of its kind in northern Tamil Nadu. While the rest of this region is generally dry, including the predominantly short and rocky hills of the Eastern Ghats, Yercaud presents a welcome contrast with its cool climate where temperature never rises above 30ºC and dip below 13ºC. It is also a less expensive place than either Udhagamandalam or Kodaikkanal.
Kurumbapatti Zoological Park (13 km)
Located at the foothills of Shevaroyan Hills, the Kurumbapatti Zoological Park is spread on an area of 11.5 hectares of reserve forest land. The park is home to an array of a species including spotted deer, crocodiles and birds.
Mettur Dam (52 km)
The major dam of the state across the river Cauvery has been constructed in a gorge in 1926. It provides irrigation facilities to thousands of acres of land in the districts of Erode, Trichy and Thanjavur. A scenic picnic spot the place has a beautiful park with lawns. It is an industrial centre for aluminum and chemical products.
Tharamangalam (27 km)
The place is famous for Kailasanathar Temple which has beautiful statues and stone carvings.
Sidhar Koil (10 km)
En route to Elampillai, the place is associated with Siddhar saints and attracts devotes in large number.
