Kodaikanal, a charming hill station, stands amidst sylvan beauty on the southern crest of the upper Palani Hills near Madurai in Tamil Nadu. It is also referred to the princess of Hills and is located 2,133 m above sea level.
Kodaikanal is also well known for the Kurinji flower which blooms once in 12 years in December and covers the valley in a beautiful sea of blue. It last bloomed in 2006; the next bloom is expected in 2018.
Sights to See
Kodaikanal Lake: Spread over an area of 24 hectares (60 acres) and skirted by a 4.8 km tarred road, the lake is the main attraction of the hill station. This is an excellent place for boating, and fishing is possible with permission.
Golf Club: Situated at a height of 6,000 feet, this 18- hole par- 66 course is spread over a 100 plus acres.
Bryant’s Park: The park is located on the eastern side of the lake, covers an area of over 20 acres, and boasts of over 740 varieties of roses.

Astrophysical Observatory: The observatory, situated at a height of 2,347 m, was founded in 1899. It is the only one of its kind in the country where a good deal of work on solar astrophysics is done. Visiting hours: 10 am to 12.30 pm and 7 to 9 pm (during season); 10 pm to 12 noon on Fridays only (off season).
Waterfalls: Fairy Falls are located about 5 km from Kodaikanal Lake; Silver Cascade Falls are located about 8 km from the lake where the excess water from Kodai Lake surges down in the form of a roaring, 180- feet high waterfall.

Berijam Lake (21 km): This lake supplies drinking water to the Periakulam town. It is an angler’s delight and abounds in trout. Permission for fishing has to be obtained from the fisheries department.
Thalaiyar Falls: Also known as the Rat Tail Falls, these waterfalls, at 975 feet in height, are counted as one of the highest in the world.Palani (64 km): Palani is famous for two great temples: the ancient Thiru Avinangudi temple, celebrated in song and story, located at the foot of the hill; and the more recent and popular Sri Dandayudhapani temple, dedicated to Lord Subramanya, on top of a 140 m high hill. One of the six abodes of Lord Subramanya, the deity was created by an ardent devotee of the god called Bhogar out of an amalgamation of nine poisonous minerals.
