Gateway to Gods

Haridwar is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering a tapestry of Indian culture and civilization. Haridwar, also known as Mayapuri, Kapila, and Gangadwar, is also known as the ‘Gateway to Gods.’ According to legend, worshippers of Lord Shiva (Har) and Lord Vishnu (Hari) pronounce this place Hardwar and Haridwar, respectively. It also serves as a gateway to the Dev Bhoomi and Char Dham (Uttarakhand’s four primary pilgrimage destinations), namely Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.

Bhagirath, the legendary ruler, is claimed to have brought the Ganga from heaven to earth in order to save his ancestors. The presence of three Gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, is considered to have sanctified Haridwar. Lord Vishnu is claimed to have left his imprint on the stone embedded on the upper wall of Har-Ki-Pauri, which is constantly touched by the Holy Ganga. Devout believers believe that by taking a swim in the sacred Ganga at Haridwar, people can gain salvation and enter heaven.

Haridwar is also one of the four locations where the Kumbh Mela takes place every twelve years and the Ardh Kumbh takes place every six years. It is stated that drips of Amrit (Elixir) dropped into the Brahmkund of Har-Ki-Pauri, hence a dip in the Brahmakund on this particular day is particularly fortunate, and the Maha Kumbh fair is held in Haridwar once every twelve years when Jupiter (Brahaspati) comes to the sign Aquarius (Kumbh).
