Located at Bhuvanagiri village in Pune district of Maharashtra, Bhimashankaram, or Bhimashankar as it generally referred to, is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlinga sites. Located on the Sahyadri hills amidst the breathtaking landscape of vast stretches of dense forests, and the gushing waters of the Bhima River, the sacred place is haven of peace and tranquility.
Built by Nana Fadnis, an eminent statesman of the Peshwa days, this beautiful Shiva Temple is a fine example of Nagara style. The wooden entrance of the temple is beautifully carved. On Mahashivratri day, a special religious fair is held attracting over 20,000 devotees. Other places of interest in Bhimashankaram are Bombay Point, Gupta Bhimashankar: the origin of Bhima River, Hanuman Tank and Nagphani Point.

Bhimashankar Temple
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India, Bhimashankar Temple is built in Nagara style. This is the place where lord Shiva is believed to have taken rest after slaying the notorious demon Tripurasura. The Shiva Lingam which is enshrined inside the complex of the shrine, measures around one and a half feet and is quite narrow. Goddess Kamalaja is also enshrined here.

Excursions
Excursions Bhimshankar Wildlife Sanctuary
Occupying an area of 130.78, the Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary is nestled in the thickly forested Sahyadri hills. The sanctuary is home to some of the rare and endangered species like the Indian giant squirrel and shekru.
You can also spot leopards, porcupines, wild boars, barking deers, hyenas, flying squirrels, sambars, Rhesus macaque, Hanuman langur, etc.
