Agra in Uttar Pradesh is India’s most popular tourist destination, home to the Taj Mahal, one of the world’s seven wonders. This historic city is filled with monuments, architectural marvels, and magnificently planted gardens that bear witness to the Mughal dynasty’s majesty. While keeping its excellent arts and crafts, the city also has a thriving food sector.

The city, formerly the capital of the ancient Mughals, remains proudly today on the banks of the River Yamuna, with a royal legacy that appeals to all. Visitors can stay at opulent hotels, buy at malls and plazas, and eat contemporary specialities at expensive restaurants while admiring the grand structures and weaving through crowded chowks and bazaars.

Agra is mentioned in the Mahabharata as ‘Agraban,’ or a vital element of the Braj Bhumi, or Lord Krishna’s realm. During the reign of Raja Badal Singh, a Sikarwar Rajput king who is reported to have constructed the city in 1475, many notable historical events are said to have occurred in the city. However, it rose to political prominence with the Lodhi dynasty’s Sikander Lodhi (1498-1517). Under the reign of Mughal ruler Babur in 1526 AD, it was given a fresh lease on life. He was an arts supporter who wanted the city’s residents to appreciate the better things in life.

Babur’s descendants, emperors Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan, all added to the city’s opulence in terms of riches, patronage, and architectural marvels. Agra became a centre for art, culture, education, and trade. The city’s delectable cuisine, awe-inspiring architecture, and arts and crafts are all reminders of its historic past. Agra is a haven for crafts like marble and soft stone inlay work, and its rich repertoire of arts and crafts has seeped into its current characteristics as well. Nur Jahan, the Mughal empress, is supposed to have personally overseen the growth of arts and handicrafts in this region. She was reputed to be a zari embroidery expert herself.
